NSW Maritime urges safety on water for Eden Whale Festival
NSW Maritime will be keeping an eye from waterside to ensure things go smoothly for the Eden Whale Festival this weekend.
Between 20,000 and 30,000 visitors were expected to descend upon the tiny seaside port for the festival timed to coincide with the annual whale migration.
A proportion of participants will arrive by water, so it will be important for all skippers to remember they are responsible for the safety of all on board. This includes ensuring there are enough lifejackets for each person, remaining below 0.05 blood alcohol limit, keeping a proper lookout at all times, and travelling at a safe speed.
It’s also important to remember that Twofold Bay and is quite open to the elements. Skippers should check the weather, and check it often if you plan on participating in the festival – from the water.
In the event a whale is seen in the water, skippers must ensure their vessels remain 150 metres away – 300 metres if there is also a calf present.
If a whale approaches your vessel, slow down to a ‘no wash’ speed and move away or disengage your vessel’s gears, make no sudden movement and minimise noise.
Entertainment at the whale festival over the three days – 31 October, 1 and 2 November - will include market stalls, a photography competition, battle of the bands and a ‘create an outdoor pirate’ competition.
NSW Maritime is a proud supporter of the Eden Whale Festival. |
